I gotta say man. I tried the demo and it was fun. It played just like a Mario game, so you were spot on if you were going for accuracy. There were some slight issues here and there though.
Like I see with a lot of games made in game maker or similar programs, Mario occasionally got stuck to a wall or block. Also, some of the item blocks wouldn't activate when I hit them, even when I was right under them. I dunno what's that about. Finally, when Mario dies or transforms into invincible Mario, there's some annoying lag which slows the gameplay down by a bit.
They're all minor nicks here and there that could be a problem during hardcore gameplay. Along with that, If I could make one more suggestion, it would be to tweak mario's normal walk speed. I feel it could be faster to smooth out gameplay speed and make the gameplay all the more satisfying.
Can't wait til the next update.

The beta is pretty good. And now the bugs and issues you could work out.
Like Chaos said, when you get the star and mario turns invincible the game stops, and then continues. And when it ends, it stops and then continues. No idea how to fix that XD.
I didn't get stuck to a wall or block until the end of the level.
The breakable blocks, and the ? mark boxes didn't break until I was right under it. They are breakable but only if you hit it at the right place.
The music is wonderful, and the sound effects are good.
I got a little sad when I walked to the left at the beginning of the level and died XD. You might want to put an invisible wall there to prevent the player from doing that on accident.
